FAQ

  • Do I have to come in to the library to pick up my new library card? Can you mail it to me?
You must pick up your card in person at the first floor Borrow and Returns desk with your photo ID and proof of Texas residence within 30 days of applying for the library card.
  • Where can I drop books off?
We have two book drop locations: one inside the library, on the first floor, to the right of the Borrow & Return desk, and a convenient drive-thru on the south side of the building.
  • Can I check out with my driver’s license? Can I check out without a library card?
You can now check out using your driver's license. To do this, take your license to the first floor Borrow and Returns desk, so that it can be added as an alternate ID. Once added to your account, you can use your driver's license to check out at any self-check station.
  • Can I check out eBooks?
Yes you can! You can search for them in the catalog, or browse via Downloads! You will also find lots of information about how to get eBooks on your eReader, tablet, smart phone, PC and more.
  • What’s my password/PIN?
Your password (sometimes called your PIN) is the code you set up when you created your account. If you need to retrieve or reset your password, you may either visit any Ask Us desk or visit Password Help online.
  • I put an item on hold, but it’s not on the Holds Shelf.
When an item you’ve put a hold is ready for pick up, the library will either call or e-mail you, according to your notification preference. The items will be available for pick up for five days on the first floor Holds shelf to the left of the Borrow and Returns Desk. Holds are organized by the first three letters of the last name of the library card holder.
If you’ve already received notification via phone or email telling you that a hold is in, but it’s not on the shelf, your hold may have expired, as it only stays on the Holds Shelf for five days. If you requested materials via Interlibrary Loan, you will receive a notification for a hold pick up but your materials must be requested at the Borrow and Return desk.
If you’d like to check on your hold or place a new one, head to any Ask Us desk. We’ll be glad to help!
  • I can’t find the item I’m looking for!
    • Ask a Librarian -- If the catalog says an item is checked in, but you can’t find it on the shelf, ask a librarian! We’re here to help you. And of course we can help you with holds and Interlibrary loans as well.
    • Place a hold -- If you find the title you want in the catalog, but it’s checked out, try placing a hold (you'll find the option in the catalog, once you've clicked on the specific item you want).
    • Place an Interlibrary Loan  -- If it appears we don't have the item in our catalog, you might consider placing an Interlibrary loan.
  • I have overdue items! Will I be fined? How much is my fine?
The Frisco Public Library does not charge fines for overdue items.
If you have overdue items, your account will be blocked (which means you won’t be able to place holds or check out new items) until all overdue items are checked in. If your items are more than 30 days overdue, they are assumed lost and your account will be charged for the price of each item, along with a processing fee (the price of making a regular book from a library vendor into a proper library book). Returning the item will clear charges.
  • My account is blocked/barred! What do I do?
Both “blocked” and “barred” accounts mean you have overdue items and can’t check out additional items until your account is cleared. “Blocked” means that the items have been overdue for less than 30 days, and you must simply return items. “Barred” means the items have been overdue for 30 or more days, and your account has been charged for the replacement of the items. Returning the items will clear your account (as will paying the replacement costs, if you can’t find the items to return them). Barred accounts will need to be cleared in person at the first floor Borrow and Returns desk.
If you’ve just checked in your items, it will take  five to 20 minutes for the items to be checked in, depending on how busy the library is at that moment. It’s a good idea to drop your items off on your way in, so they have plenty of time to clear while you browse for new items. That way your overdue items just put in the book drop won’t block you at checkout!
If you think your account ought to be in clear (e.g. not blocked), visit the first floor Borrow & Return desk. We can check on your account and try to resolve any discrepancies.
  • My items are due, but I want to keep them longer. How do I do that? (renewals)
Most library materials are eligible for renewal unless another member has them on hold or they have become overdue. DVDs can be renewed one time for one week. Books, audiobooks, and music CDs can be renewed two times for two weeks. Items in the 2x2 , Bluebonnet, and Travel kit collections may not be renewed.
To renew your items, visit Renew My Materials.
  • How do I use the List feature on my online account?
In the catalog, click on the item you would like to add to your list, and the item information should open in a pop-up window.  Click on the "Select an action" button in the top left corner of the pop-up window. You’ll find an option to "Add to my lists". Until you sign in to your account, the item will stay in a temporary list. To save the list, be sure to log in (click the orange "Log in" link at the top of any catalog screen.)
You can use this feature to build lists of whatever you’d like! Books you’d like to read in the future, books you’ve already checked out but want to remember – you name it! You can create lists and name them to keep track of them.
