Event Schedule:

  • 9:00-10:30 "Book Boosters: A Practical Literacy-Focused Toolkit for Early Childhood Educators and Professionals" by Ginette Margarida Abreu and Nikki York. As educators and professionals, we have a good understanding of the theoretical benefits of reading and its impact on brain development, but how do we get there? How does an everyday activity become an impacting experience in a child’s development? Well, we have a few ideas on how to get us there. During this workshop, you will learn easy-to-implement strategies that nurture, encourage and set the stage for literacy development. We navigate through sensory exploration, body positioning, phonological awareness, language development and fine motor skills; all coming from the latest empirical findings and years of experience.
  • 10:45-12:15 "Fostering Social-Emotional Development Through Play" by Dr. Jennifer Cottle. Are you curious about how to encourage your children to share and play nicely with others? What is self-regulation, and how is it beneficial to children’s social-emotional development? In this session, participants will learn the answers to these questions, as well as social-emotional developmental milestones from birth to age 11. Participants will also learn how to foster prosocial behaviors through play.
  • 12:15-1:15 LUNCH
  • 1:15-2:45 "From Lullabies to Literature" by Micheline Farhoud. Early literacy is what young children know about reading, and writing before they can read and write. Children need to see, feel, touch, and explore the world around them to understand the meaning of words. We, as adults, are entrusted to provide the best learning environment through the most rapid and dramatic developmental period of their lives by reading, singing, rhyming, and more. In this fun class, we will discover how we can help children at an early age develop their language skills through finger-play, lap songs, reading, storytelling, and interaction to enable the wonderful transitional development from Lullabies into Literature.
  • 3:00-4:30 "Sensory Integration: Working with the Whole Child" by Dr. Jennifer Quong. Preschoolers seem to have abundant energy running around, climbing and spinning in circles. Why? One aspect of the physical development of a child is the development and integration of sensory systems. This session will explore what a sensory diet is and looks like in preschoolers as well as how all 7 senses develop and affect behavior. Attendees will look at activities, and materials that could be added to meet the child’s sensory needs. Resources, strategies and materials for each sense and sensory diet will be available and how children show they need sensory help and strategies to use.
