Designed with our youngest library patrons in mind, Babies and Books is a multi-sensory learning experience for newborns to 17 months old. A springboard for literacy, this fun enrichment program will help parents/caregivers strengthen the unique bond with their infants through captivating stories, the imagery of nursery rhymes, and the magical world of signing! Based upon distinct developmental groups, pre-walkers and walkers, we have prepared two separate programs to meet the needs of these little movers and shakers. Think of it as twenty minutes of pure baby delight!

Sharing tender lullabies, whimsical songs, well-loved rhymes, and age-appropriate picture and board books, the librarians and staff will model ways in which parents/caregivers can fuel imaginative play, stimulate brain development, and build oral communication with their newborns at home.  At Babies and Books, parents/caregivers will be seated on the floor with their infants in their laps, discovering the musical rhythm of language and mimicking joyful movements to bring literature to life. As children’s librarians, we understand the value of literacy and the love of language for young patrons. Our hope is that books and libraries will become an essential ingredient in your lives!

Please see our For Grown-Ups page for some great web resources related to parenting, early literacy, and baby signing!

Check out the Cozy Up With Board Books list on our Take-a-Look Books page for recommended winter reading.

We would also like to credit Anaheim Public Library for their Hug-a-By Baby program, from which we borrowed many ideas and resources for Books and Babies.

Here are a few special guidelines you need to know:

•  We encourage you to bring a blanket for your baby to lie on as our storytime carpet will be home to many young friends.
•  To improve sound quality, we kindly request placing cell phones in silent mode during the program.
•  Only baby and parents/caregivers may attend the session as the program has been arranged exclusively for babies.  One adult lap per child, please.
In consideration of others, fussy babies may be calmed and comforted outside the story area.
•  We ask that infants come in good health to storytime and with clean diapers. Changing tables are available in the restroom next to the programming area.
•  Created as a hands-on, interactive experience between baby and parent/caregiver, all children
must remain within arm’s reach of the accompanying adult.
